Have you ever noticed how many of the big corporate brands that make money off the LGBTQ community during Pride Month in June often seem to abandon interest in that same community come July 1? The group show “What Remains” at Schlomer Haus Gallery was curated in response to the phenomenon, known as “rainbow washing,” in reference to the abundance of multicolored Gay Pride flag merchandise that pops up in June to cash in on the queer dollar.
The original art in “What Remains” was created from the multicolored debris left over after this year’s San Francisco Pride Celebration. The work by Bay Area LGBTQ artists Alexander Hernandez, Alma Landeta, Jamil Hellu, Jason Mecier, Jun Yang, Leonard Reidelbach, Monica Canilao, Nat Saia, Nicole Shaffer and Marcel Pardo Ariza ranges from photography and painting to sculpture and textile. Works from the show are on sale at both the gallery and via Artsy. 100% of the proceeds will go to local counseling agency Queer LifeSpace.
The show is both a pointed and poignant piece of commentary and a fitting commission for Schlomer Haus Gallery, whose mission is to highlight the work of queer artists and issues impacting the LGBTQ community.
"What Remains" Noon-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. On view through Sept. 30. Free. Schlomer Haus Gallery, 2128 Market St., S.F. 415-275-0960. www.schlomerhaus.com
